We are a local non-profit (umbrellaed under Chappy & Friends) dedicated to taking in and caring for horses that were lete down by humans—animals often cast aside once they no longer serve a human purpose. Many arrive with both physical and emotional scars. We take them in, deal with physical issues, and than we work on rebuilding their trust in humans again. We feel truly blessed to provide them with a safe home where they can live out their days in comfort and dignity. Currently, we care for 22 horses—11 of whom are in full sanctuary—with monthly care costs averaging $625–$825 per horse.
Our mission extends beyond horse rescue and rehabilitation. We connect youth with our sanctuary horses, inviting them to help with liberty and groundwork that aids the horses in regaining strength. In turn, these young people develop life skills such as confidence, responsibility, empathy, and so much more while forming deep bonds with the herd. They learn how to care for them, nuture them, and rebuild their trust and s how them what love is again. While medical care is always a priority, we’ve found that human connection plays an equally vital role in healing the emotional wounds of these horses.
When people ask where our horses come from, we say, “They find us.” Each one has a story—some marked by hardship, neglect, or being repeatedly let down by humans. Many arrive with significant medical needs and require specialized care: custom feed, medication, farrier work, dental treatment, and veterinary attention. Some recover enough to participate in our Oregon Horsemanship program; others remain in lifelong sanctuary, enjoying peace, safety, and love.
Melody’s Haven of Hope was founded to ensure that every horse in our care receives the compassion, respect, and support they deserve. Your generosity makes it possible for these incredible animals to not just survive—but thrive. Click on the button for each horse to learn more about their story, see their specific needs, and potentially sponsor one that might “speak” to you of their need.

Our Beautiful Queen the Sanctuary is named after cantered over the Rainbow Bridge in 2022
Barn Name: Melody
Full Name: PF Endless Melody
Breed: Purebred Polish Arabian
Birthdate: May 10, 1991
The beautiful queen of the barn. She came to Letitia over 16 years ago when she needed a soft spot to land. Letitia’s dream horse since she was a little girl. An ex show horse, she has been with us the longest now. She is the first one to come in at night and enjoys green apples and raspberries. She has a spirit that draws people to her and has a sense for any child that comes in with special needs
Cat
Barn Name: Cat
Full Name: Just Cattin’ Around
Breed: Arabian/Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 2006
Oh Cat! What to do with you? A stall opened and another one found us. She was advertised, but no one stepped up to give her a forever home. Her elderly owners had both passed away and family sold her to someone that knew nothing about horses. Left at another barn, that family decided to try to find her a home where she would be understood and loved, not passed on again. We were able to trace back owners and found out she had been trained to be a show horse in her young life. While being temperamental, she can also be so sweet. We have had to work through a variety of health issues and now on to increasing her riding time. She has so much potential and we want to help her find that.

Lucy
Barn Name: Lucy
Full Name: MJA Whata Gal
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 2000
What is one more? Lucy was a little different and came to us through a Cowboy Dressage friend. For some reason we felt she needed to be with us and, even though we really didn’t have the space, we managed to make enough room. She is quite a talker and nickers to welcome everyone. Having on and off lameness it has been a year of trying to figure out what is wrong and treating her arthritis with PRP. She is a heart-stealer and as we work through her issues, she will teach many how to ride and have a love of horses. We know she needed to land with us and spend her life at our little bed and breakfast!

Tahlia
Barn Name: Tahlia
Full Name: Poco Tabs Deal
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 1997
Oh Tahlia! We had a stall open up and what pops up in my Facebook but a Palomino (remember I said no Palominos) that I couldn’t get off my mind. Underweight, sad, and four homes in five months; when I saw her I knew she had to go home with us. She has been a challenge both physically, trying to get down to her pain, and emotionally with her issues. She just wants to be loved and understood. She is so loved by her people and they have been willing to take the time to work through things. It has been a long haul, but it will be worth it in the end. This girl is worth the time and effort and goes to show how some love and understanding can heal lots of wounds. While she felt her life was over we showed her what love is again!

Solid
Barn Name: Solid
Full Name: DA Solid Gold
Breed: Arabian
Birthdate: 2006
A trip over the mountains brought her to us when we believe she needed us most. She stepped off the trailer all shaggy and rough looking, but oh does she have the prettiest petite head with a white mark that makes it look like her tongue is sticking out. We have worked very hard both with time and money to get her healthy again. As an ongoing process, it is not a quick or easy fix, in fact it will be something that we have to sustain and maintain the rest of Solid’s life but we feel it is worth it to help her have the best life that she deserves. If you are interested in sponsoring her monthly medications or regular bloodwork please let us know.

Ty
Barn Name: Ty
Full Name: BJs Secret Moon
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthday: 1997
Ty is quite the handsome man. His family was looking for a forever home when he needed to be retired from his roping career. Despite being the largest horse in the barn, he’s really quite the wuss. First afraid of birds then a butterfly, trail riding isn’t really his thing, but he’s become a good arena horse and helps with the program. For those willing to put in the effort and spend the time, Ty is an honest and dependable partner.

Rose
Barn Name: Rose
Full Name: Country Roads Sterling Rose
Breed: Miniature Horse
Birthdate: 2011
Right away we said that we should change her name to Rose “She’s SO Cute.” We thought about needing a miniature at the barn for the work we do and Rose came into our world. Its amazing how they find us. The breeder that raised Rose had gotten her back after she had seven homes in four years. When we got her loaded up the breeder had tears in her eyes and said “Rose I promised you would have a forever home”. With she finds the peace and joy she didn’t have before. She is a favorite of the littles and for the ones scare to approach a big horse.

When we met Rose she was teaching the babies how to be “real” horses. Never did we think Jazzy would be with us. Our friend wound up with Jazzy at one point and called me to ask if she got Jazzy back would we give her a forever home. Of course, I jumped at the chance as I had always wanted Jazzy to be with her sister. It is so fun to see them together!

Jewel
Barn Name: Jewel
Full Name: Golden Magic Jewel
Breed: American Paint Horse
Birthdate: 2006
Look who appeared when we had an opening…pretty Jewel out of southern Oregon; after a long 10 hour drive and quick decision to bring her home. Little did we know she had never had a relationship with a human that would allow her to be confident. With a lot of uncertainty and anxiety, she hurt herself and was on stall rest for over 9 months. Her injury turned into a blessing as it gave her some much needed time to decompress. She needed some special humans that would take the time she needed to learn how to connect, build trust, and show her understanding. With their help she is well on her way to becoming a confident partner. It will be great to see where she fits into the program.

Carmen
Barn Name: Carmen
Full Name: Stellar Performer
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 2008
Carmen came from a horse show past where she was really shut down Our new friend took her in when she needed a new life, pulled her shoes, and put her in the field for the last few years. When I met her and heard about Carmen I was concerned about who she really was going to turn out to be. You never know about horses with a past (as we know all too well). From the day she stepped, or rather fell, out of the trailer she was meant to be here. Thank goodness her Mom knew that. Carmen has the kindest eyes and you just know she loves all the attention she gets at our barn.

Ziggy and Oliver (the Barn Cats)
Barn Name: Ziggy and Oliver
Full Name:
Breed: American Shorthair
Birthdate: August 2017
Our friend ran a barn with lots of barn cats. One day we were there and this little tiny orange kitten was in a kennel, hissing and ready to attack.
When I called my friend that we would take the little feral kitten in, I said “I wish you had a grey one” well guess what the next day I get a call “Saul caught a grey kitten for you”. Oh well, maybe no one would notice two instead of one.
Raised in our office for their first year with lots of cuddles and play, we didn’t let them out off a leash until their were old enough to stay close and get fixed Well that meant they turned into little puppy dogs and not only follow us around, but love lots of people intereaction. Not your typical barn cats for sure!

Barn Name: Elena
Full Name: Elegant Lady of Bardo
Breed: Warlander
Birthdate: 2017
An ad, a backyard in outer east county, a ride out to see her, and then back with the trailer. When she wouldn’t get in and four people were trying to force her I asked them to stop, walked up, and put a hand on her while she stood stock still and said quietly so no one else could hear “if you want to come home with us you need to get in the trailer now.” After that she walked right in and stood. What a great mind and a loving spirit. She loves greeting everyone who comes to the barn! We can’t wait to see her reach her full potential.
Below are Horses That Have Passed Blessing us with their love and the knowledge the we gave them a great forever home!
Joey (running free over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Joey
Full Name: Sir Joseph’s Knight
Breed: Quarter Horse Cross
Birthdate: 1989
Joey helped start the program after he was taken in by us. He taught so much people to love, trust, and partner with a horse.
He won the coveted “Helping Humans” award from the Oregon Horseman’s Association for all the work they saw him do, The first time a horse had every won it.
Hottie (Over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Hottie
Full Name: Justa Hottie
Breed: Morgan/Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 1989
The cute guy that’s our Hottie man He came to us 11 years ago and really helped us create the program we have today. His past owner could no longer take care of him and he had a lot of structural issues that took 2 years and a lot of help and rehabilitation to give him a life where he felt useful. If it wasn’t for his gray hair and allergy eyes, you’d never know how old he is. He has started many kids and adults on their path to loving horses and taught many life lessons both on his back and on the ground. Retired from the riding program due to a chronic tendon injury, he continues to enjoy his EAL work. Be sure to stop and give him a pet and carrots when you come to the barn so he continues to feel the love we have for him.
Breezie (running free over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Breezie
Full Name: Breezie’s Girl
Breed: Quarter Horse/American Paint
Birthdate: 1997
We heard about a kids’ horse going to auction. While we had never been before we couldn’t see a great horse go down a bad path. Of course, we traipsed all the way down there without a trailer and, you guessed it, another one we couldn’t leave. Breezie is such a sweet soul and her nickers always make us smile. She’s proven herself to be a kind and patient teacher.
From “checked out” when we picked her up to the champion she is, Breezie is such a sweet soul and always gives nickers when we arrive in the morning.
Danny (Over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Danny
Full Name:
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: Unknown
The call came in that a horse needed us desparately. He was sitting at the auction and was supposed to be a kids horse. They begged us to help so we put in a bid to keep he away from the meat truck. When we picked him us he was skin and bones. Amazing they had someone ride him through but maybe it was to hide the shape he was in. He had been shot multiple times in the face with an air gun and his teeth was worn down to nothing probably trying to forage for food. While he was only with us for a few months before his organs gave out we were able to show him what love really was. Everyone rallied around to try to rehabiliate him, but in the end his body just had been through too much. Rest in peace Danny you deserved so much more and were are so thankful we got to give you and best end of life possible.
Rufus (Over the Rainbow Bridge Running Free)
Barn Name: Rufus
Full Name: Two Bits of Gold
Breed: American Paint Horse
Birthdate: 1995
On loan to us from our good friend Christine, Rufus will be a part of Oregon Horsemanship until he retires. While he has only been with us a short time he has fit in so well its hard to believe it has only been a few months. Kind and gentle he has already won a lot of hearts and is helping us teach students the importance of good horsemanship.
Jack (Over the Rainbow Bridge Running Free of Pain)
Barn Name: Jack
Full Name: Jackson’s Wildfire
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthday: 1991
Jack came to us a grumpy old man with Lilly when their owner was injured and couldn’t care for them anymore. The TLC he has received from everyone has softened his grumpy exterior, though he’d never admit it. When he became lame a few years ago we had a long road to follow with first a misdiagnosis then to surgery with a new vet. It has been amazing to see that he went from potentially needing to be put down to returning to living a rich life. His knee isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. Jack is now retired from the riding program, but continues to love getting attention and carrots.
Tuff (Over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Tuff
Full Name: My Future is Secure
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: 1996
A 4H family needed a home for their dear gelding when the mom was going to have a very serious surgery. We watched videos and received pictures of Tuff both at home and 4H horse fair. He looked like he might be a good horse for kids, We drove to Sutherlin, Oregon to pick him up. I walked in the barn, took one look at Tuff and went over to his stall to look down. I was hoping he was standing on some type of a raised floor not that he was actually that tall. Nope, tall he is. We are working through physical issues he has and working him into our program.
Sabina (Over the Rainbow Bridge)
Barn Name: Sabina
Full Name:
Breed: Quarter Horse
Birthdate: Unknown
Letitia walked into the barn one day to find a beautiful big white (truly a grey) mare. She was mesmerizing, but in terrible shape from being thrown out to pasture and now she had severe laminitis. The barn owner said that she needed girls to care for her and she would let us but we had to pay to keep her there. With limited funds and not realizing what we signed up for we did it to get her out of pain. At ath time we didn’t know what to do but we rehabbed her to life again. When we left that barn we made sure to take her with us to live out her life knowing love. We were able to give her some good years with us and lots of love.
